THE BIG ONE - ELECTION 2016

Tomorrow is the first day of early voting. There are so many hard choices to be made that will either help this county and nation grow, heal and prosper or allow it to continue its path to destruction. The voting public has been influenced by mainstream media, social media and even their local churches as to whom they should vote for in the upcoming election. We here at Jefferson County Weekly will now attempt to do the same.

This election cycle's Presidential Election has panned out to be very entertaining to say the least. The insults and slander abound as Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump square off in what is said to be the contest that will change American politics forever. Possibly creating new political parties and or strengthening those that have been overlooked in the past. It is this writers opinion that neither of them have what it takes to get this country going in the right direction. Clinton's lies, cover ups and ties to unsavory characters in the middle east via the clinton foundation does not shine a good lite on her character.

Donald Trump's policies on imigration, unemployment and a no nonsense type of government impresses me until he displays some sort of possible mental illness that forces him to do and say things that are not presidential or even respectfull to others. i will probably close my eyes and cast my vote for whomever the lucky candidate may be.

History in the making. Will Zena Stephens be the first minority, first double minority sheriff in Jefferson County Texas or will Ray Beck be the first Republican sheriff in the last fifty years or so. I sure hope so because we need change of party, change of administration and a change of thinking at the Counties highest law enforcement position. Social media has been ablaze since Ms. Stephens filing for candidacy in the Democratic Primaries. Rumors of her being recruited to split the black vote and lessen Joe Stevensons chances at winning by a landslide in both the primary and general elections seem logical and the norm for Jefferson County Politics. If the rumors are true,,fine,,I am supporting Ray Beck because of his 38 years of experience in Law Enforcement and the fact that unlike Ms Stephens, who worked for the current administration for over fifteen years; Mr Beck has no ties. BECK FOR SHERIFF

The 136th District Court will either be run by former Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, Baylor Wortham or his opponent local attorney Dana Tamaus. Mr Worthams experience as a former Jefferson County Assistant District Attorney and his work with the U.S. Attorneys office makes him an easy choice in this election. His willingness to assist other courts with their overflow in an attempt to ensure that people recieve a fair and speedy trial is a something that his opponent thinks would be a conflict due to Baylor being a relative of District Attorney Bob Wortham. Baylor has assured us that anyone who appeared before him that had a problem with that would be able to file a motion for him to recuse himself. Baylor Wortham will make a fine judge for the court.

The battle for County Court At Law #2 will be a close one. Luke Nichols is has tried many cases as a current Prosecutor fo the District Attorneys Office while Terrence Holmes has not tried as many cases but has experience as a Judge. Luke Nichols is our choice for this position due to the number of cases he has tried that are of the criminal nature. Judge Holmes presently handles a traffic court.
