A recent post by Philip Klein of the Southeast Texas Political Review caught my attention the other day. The caption read "Ghetto Anchor", and the comments on the post were hateful, misguided and full of resentment. The subject of the article was Ms. Dejonique Garrison, the recently hired news anchor at KBMT channel 12. Ms. Garrison is a magna cum laude graduate of Clark Atlanta University with a degree in Mass Media Arts, and also a graduate of Northwestern's University's Medill School of Journalism. The accusations in Mr. Kleins article accused her of not having good diction, being mean and angry. His mention of her coming off as a radical left wing media type gave me the impression that this was merely a politcal attack on a journalist that has proven to fair and unbias. There is also mention of complaints about her by her coworkers, law enforcement and an unnamed local clergy member.
It is my opinion that the old regime at the station and even in the community itself are afraid that her style of journalism will threaten the power that they have over those who seek the truth. The comments on the post were laden with complaints of her editorial regarding George Floyd and BLM; a scathing indictment of the injustice that people of color face here in America.
Dejonique Garrison, an intelligent, well educated young lady of color that will be hated by some in Southeast Texas, but don't get it twisted....SHE IS LOVED AND APPRECIATED BY MANY!!
